"Doll" Carter Named NNPA Publisher of the Year
By ED WENDT
Lenora
"Doll" Carter was named Publisher of the Year
by fellow members of the National Newspaper Publisher
Association during the organization's 2004 convention
in New Orleans.
Carter, who has served as publisher of Forward Times since
1971, was selected for her outstanding contributions to
the community and African-American news media.
Dorothy R. Leavell, publisher of the Chicago News Crusader
and former NNPA president, nominated Carter for the top
award.
"Doll exemplifies the publisher that is dedicated
to the Black press," says Leavell. "She is active
locally, but also consistently active on the national
level through the National Newspaper Publishers Association.
She truly deserves this honor, the highest honor bestowed
by the NNPA Foundation."
Leavell says NNPA members "realized the hard work
and time Ms. Carter has put into her position as treasurer
of the NNPA and wanted to show their appreciation by this
award."
Carter was elected NNPA treasurer in 2003.
"I am personally grateful for her work at the NNPA
and personally proud to call her my friend," Leavell
stresses.
Carter held the office of secretary for eight years and
has also been a board member of the NNPA during the 1970s
and 1980s. Leavell praised her for "working tirelessly
to restore integrity and accuracy to the office of NNPA
treasurer."
The NNPA is made up of publishers for approximately 286
African-American newspapers in the United States. Carter
was selected as Publisher of the Year from a group of
four publishers who were nominated earlier this year.
"I am honored to have been selected as Publisher
of the Year from my peers," says Carter. "We
have all worked so hard to make the NNPA the successful
organization it has been through the years and is today.
I am fortunate to work with so many dedicated professionals."
Carter says the NNPA "faces great challenges to make
sure that Black newspapers continue to keep African-Americans
informed of the news that is so often ignored and overlooked
by the mainstream media."
"We must make sure that our newspapers receive a
fairer share of advertising dollars from the business
community and corporate America," she stresses. "And
we must make sure that we remember those businesses and
corporations who today, and in the past, have supported
our newspapers through advertising. They are truly our
friends and the friends of the Black community."
"Our greatest challenge ahead as Black publishers
is in advertising," Carter insists. "The NNPA
must, and shall, meet that challenge. But we can only
do so by working together."
Forward Times also received second place in the Best Editorial
category.
"I wish to thank our readers for their loyalty over
the years," Carter says. "Without them, none
of these honors could be possible."
