Dr. Gusta Booker, Jr., long one of the most influential ministers in the city, announced his retirement from Greater St. Matthew Church. The Rev. Gusta Booker, Jr., the church’s founder and pastor, has decided to retire as Senior Pastor effective December 30, 2018. On Sunday, November 18, 2018 at 10:00 AM, Dr. Gusta Booker Jr. will deliver his final message as Senior Pastor of Greater St. Matthew Church. We are inviting all who can attend to come and witness this historic event!
“Although I have been preparing for this transition,” Booker said, “it was a difficult decision. I have a kind of fatherly affection about the church. With my late wife Theola, I founded the church and have been with it all of its life, from the time it was a few people meeting in a living room in South Park, until today, holding three services in two locations.”
Organized September 1, 1968, Greater Saint Matthew is one Church with two locations and is a place where the membership believes that it’s truly “worth a trip to the Saint!” Booker started this church with 13 people and it is now a thriving mega church with more than 4,500 members.
“I have been blessed to go a long way,” Booker said. “I don’t plan to retire to a quiet life. I have accepted the role of Pastor Emeritus of Greater St. Matthew and intend to continue working on several projects including a housing project for senior citizens.
Come and join the Greater Saint Matthew Church family, along with a host of Houston notables and distinguished guests, for an inspiring and historical celebration of past and future. The church begins its transition to its second half-century of ministry, always striving not just to put bodies in pews but – with uncompromising clarity – to put Christ in hearts.
This glorious celebration will be held at the Greater Saint Matthew Southwest Campus located at 14919 South Main in Houston.
A sold-out tribute gala is being held for Dr. Booker and his late wife, Theola, on Saturday, November 17, 2018.
