The Houston Astros are The American League Champions

The Houston Astros and the New York Yankees were tied up with 3 victories each as they headed into Game 7 of the American League Championship series. On Saturday night the Astros defeated the Yankees 4-0 to advance to the World Series match-up against the LA Dodgers. This was an emotional and necessary victory for a city that is 2 months out from being underwater.

This marked the second time in this franchise’s 56 year history that the Astros have made it to the World Series.

During the regular 162 game season, the Astros’ stellar offense scored 896 runs and ultimately won 101 games. They spent 97% of the season leading the American League central in first place.

As dazzling as the Astros’ offense can be with the likes of Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa, Yuli Gurriel, and others, it took the post season acquisition of Justin Verlander to keep their World Series hopes alive.

Verlander was traded to the Astros from the Detroit Tigers where he played the entirety of his MLB career for 13 seasons.

“I think I made the right choice,” Verlander told media. “This is what the game is all about. This is what you grow up dreaming about as a player, as a young kid playing Little League.”

Considering it was Verlander, who in the face of elimination, threw a complete game and pitched seven scoreless innings to clinch a victory and extend the series to a winner take all game 7; he definitely made the right decision for him and the city of Houston. He was named ALCS MVP, and rightly so.

Thus far, Verlander has won all of his games with the Astros and here’s hoping that streak continues.

The Houston Astros are now working for a World Series victory. The matchup between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros is now underway.
