The Houston Texans YMCA and its volunteers recently hosted over 600 individuals at its inaugural Community Sports Fest and Back to School Bash, where the event was free and open to members and nonmembers. The community fest had several components to it, beginning with the Sports Fest highlighting fall sports, along with Houston Texans NFL flag football and basketball.
At the Community Fest, approximately 20-25 community organizations were on-site and provided a range of information from financial literacy to college prep information. Approximately 604 backpacks were distributed to deserving students.
The Houston Texans YMCA also launched its Family Fit Break Dance Class. Immunizations and HIV testing were administered by Avenue 360 Wellness. Park Street Homes facilitated a home buying seminar. Community Partners included; Target, Forward Times, Park Street Homes, K&A, Elite Real Estate Services, Gallery of Salons Rescue Team, and City-Wide Beauticians and Barbers Association.
Located in the Palm Center at 5202 Griggs Rd. and Martin Luther King Blvd., the Houston Texans YMCA continues to serve as a crown jewel for Houston’s historic Third Ward, Sunny Side, and South Park communities. The Houston Texans YMCA, along with other YMCAs in the city offer a variety of programs for the entire family; Youth Sports; Y Teen L.I.F.E.; Active Older Adult; Group Exercise Classes; Child Watch; and Personal Training.
Since its groundbreaking in 2010, the Houston Texans YMCA has sought to embrace its rich history, while also striving to fulfill the 175-year mission of the YMCA, which is “to put Judeo-Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.”
