Just Give Oprah Her Things…and Fashions from the 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards
The 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards were this past weekend. Many things happened. Many things didn’t happen. Oprah Winfrey was selected as the 2018 recipient of the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award. This is an honor given by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in recognition of “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.” I dare say I agree with the Hollywood Foreign Press for once. Yes, Oprah deserves this honor so give her, her things. Oprah gave a rousing speech that touched on why most attendees wore black to the event in an effort to “make a statement against the epidemic of sexual harassment in the entertainment industry and beyond.” I appreciated that Oprah took her moment to pay respects, honor, and tell the story of Recy Taylor who was brutally raped in 1944. Justice was not served. The Alabama Legislature failed to prosecute the men that committed this heinous crime. Taylor, who received a “formal apology” from the Alabama Legislature in 2011, was brave enough to tell her truth which ended up being one of the catalysts of the civil rights movement.
Oprah’s speech was touching, rousing, and inspirational. I will simply ask…can we allow Oprah to have that moment? Can we just be encouraged and heed her words? Let’s not circulate memes and write think-pieces on why Oprah should be President. How dare you cast the burden of fixing this broken country on the back of a Black woman? Oprah has always been eloquent in articulating herself. That’s what she does. Don’t you dare pressure her into the office of the Presidency. Let’s in this new year use our platforms to do something different, like inform and not entertain.
