Kerry Washington to Produce Film Adaption of ‘The Mothers’
Kerry Washington is adapting a book to film that has fans excited.
Washington, through her company Simpson Street, will produce “The Mothers,” the compelling debut novel by Brit Bennett.
“The Mothers” centers on a Black Southern California community where a girl named Nadia makes the decision to terminate her teenage pregnancy and pursue higher education. She returns years later to find her high school boyfriend —who she shared the child with— is in love with her best friend.
What makes the book dynamic is that it’s narrated by the church “mothers” who know and talk about everyone’s business in town.
Bennett will also write the script for the project based on her novel, which was published in October 2016 by Riverhead, a division of Penguin.
“The experience of being Black in this country is so complicated,” Bennett said in an interview with Vogue. “All the different ways you see yourself refracted, all the different ways that you have to see yourself and navigate yourself and your body. That to me is always the direction I want to go with my writing.”
