Queen Bey Wants a Seat at the Table
Grammy Award-winning singer Beyoncé Knowles has interest in buying the Houston Rockets. This was reported shortly after current Rockets owner Leslie Alexander announced that the team would be up for sale just earlier this summer. Alexander has owned the Rockets franchise and has won two championships during his tenure as owner. Beyoncé’s interest in wanting to purchase the Rockets is not as surprising as some may say. Her husband Grammy Award-winning rapper/recording artist Jay Z was a stakeholder of the Brooklyn Nets before he started his sports agency Roc Nation Sports. Having Beyoncé as an NBA owner would diversify the entire demographic of the NBA where the only majority stakeholder who isn’t white is Michael Jordan. If Beyoncé is in fact able to purchase the team it would shake up the sports world and open up a door for women and minority owners, in which Beyoncé is both. With all of the circulation around Beyoncé being the head candidate, this could be a score for the Houston native. She most likely will be a minority owner; yet the fact that she would be a stakeholder in the franchise would be a huge milestone for women’s ownership in professional sports teams.
