Target, KaBOOM! and Houston Texans’ DeAndre Hopkins Bring Students’ Play Designs to Life and Build New Playground at Thompson Elementary
More than 200 volunteers from Target and the community recently joined forces with Houston Texans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins and KaBoom! to build a new playground at Thompson Elementary School in Houston, bringing more than 1,000 kids in the local community one step closer to having the play-filled childhood they deserve.
A playground is more than a playground. It’s a brain-expander, friend-maker and muscle-builder. Play is central to a kid’s ability to grow into a productive adult. It can transform children from sedentary, bored and solitary to physically, mentally and socially active.
Partnering with KaBOOM! is part of Target’s ongoing efforts to help make wellness more affordable, accessible and inspirational for its team members, guests and communities. Through this partnership, more children will have the joyful childhood they deserve.
The new playground was actually designed by the students of Thompson Elementary, and includes the Play Everywhere installation, consisting of colorful and playful elements to enhance the students’ pick-up and drop-off experience.
Thompson Elementary, which is in Aldine I.S.D., currently serves kindergarten through 4th grade and has been the backbone of the Greenridge Community for over 46 years. Thompson Elementary did not have the funds to acquire a playground on campus, and there is currently not a safe play area at the school for students, the daily YMCA participates or the community to use.
However, Thompson Elementary has utilized their very limited resources to support active play via physical education classes, recess and sports days. Students really enjoy playing on a playground and without a new playground, their free play opportunities are limited.
In addition to the students at Thompson Elementary, the playground will also service five neighboring elementary schools, and other kids from the community who often play on the school grounds due to a lack of public play spaces in the area.
Since 1996, KaBOOM! has been dedicated to the bold goal of giving all kids – particularly those growing up in poverty in America – the childhood they deserve, filled with balanced and active play, so they can thrive.
With its partners, KaBOOM! has built, improved and opened nearly 16,700 playgrounds, engaged more than one million volunteers and served 8.5 million kids (#playmatters).
