The Houston Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated Presents “Jazzin’ On A Sunday” 16th Annual Scholarship Fundraiser

               16th Annual Jazz Soiree Scholarship Fundraiser Attendees

The Houston Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. recently presented its 16th Annual Scholarship Fundraiser on Sunday, December 3, 2017, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Marriott Marquis Houston Hotel located in Downtown Houston. This year’s theme, “Jazzin’ On A Sunday” celebrates the Bayou City in grand fashion by honoring Kathy Taylor, an accomplished National Recording Artist with the Thelma Patten Law Award of Excellence in Arts and Letters.

This year’s co-chairs were Angela Sterling and Gwendolyn Drumgoole. This event included live entertainment, dinner, dancing, and shopping; along with 19 celebrity waiters including: Evelyn Banks, Peggy Engram, Bente Gage, Audrey Gassama, Nita Gilbert, Thelma Gould, Virginia Hubbard, Tina Marie Jones-Green, Traci Willis King, Cynthia Oliphant, Brenda Parker Dean, Gail Rogers, Jona Sargent, Jewel Smith, Angela and Norman Sterling, Richard Thomas, Carla Williams, and Dr. Carolyn Williams.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, founded in 1913, is a private, not-for-profit organization of predominantly Black, college-educated women committed to transforming lives and impacting society. The Houston Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, founded in 1927, was the first Black Greek letter organization to establish a chapter in Houston. The scholarship awards given annually by the sorority to Houston students who are college-bound, and who are members of historically underrepresented populations at institutions of higher education.

Celebration of Life for Justin Hardeway

Family and friends gathered to remember the life of Justin Hardeway who was gunned down on May 7, 2017, at 707 Greens Road. His murder is still an open investigation. His birthday was celebrated with a balloon release at his burial site in Acres Homes on December 7, 2017. He leaves to cherish his memory a host of family and friends who will miss him dearly. Houston City Council Member Dwight Boykins Fourth Annual Holiday Tree Lighting & Kwanzaa Celebration

On Saturday, December 9, 2017, Houston City Council Member District D Dwight A. Boykins recently hosted his Fourth Annual Holiday Tree Lighting and Kwanzaa Celebration that was attended by many, including Santa. Children were able to ice skate and take photos with Santa. Dancing and toy giveaways were also part of the festive evening. Council Member Dwight Boykins as well as other community leaders wished everyone a Happy Holidays & Happy Kwanzaa!

The Houston Area Urban League Inducts New Board Members

The Houston Area Urban League Board Members with Judge Clarease Yates

The Houston Area Urban League was founded in 1968. Since then, the organization has served as a voice to the voiceless. On December 7, 2017, the Houston Area Urban League (HAUL) held its annual meeting where Judge Clarease Rankin Yates swore in the new Houston Area Urban League Young Professional Officers and the new Houston Area Urban League Board Members. The outgoing H.A.U.L. Board Chair Cary Yates passed the gavel to the Incoming Board Chair, Jerry Martin the general manager KPRC Channel 2. The Houston Area Urban League sincerely appreciates Cary Yates’ years of dedicated service to the H.A.U.L. organization. The organization’s President and CEO Judson Robinson, said he is excited about the new leadership and congratulated the new board members.
