The Texas Southern Men’s Basketball Team took home their third consecutive SWAC regular season championship this past week. The Tigers were at home against the #2 Alcorn State Braves. The Braves were the hottest team coming into the game with an 11-game win streak, and the Braves were looking to get their first win against the Tigers since 2008.

The Braves got out to a quick start. They were able to get contributions from their bench the whole game, unlike the Tigers. The Braves were up by six at the end of the first half. In the second half, Zach Lofton of the Tigers began to take over the game. He was getting to the basket and being aggressive. He did miss the game-winning jumper, however, with two seconds left in regulation.

After taking the game into overtime, both Lofton and Marvin Jones of the Tigers fouled out. Jones and Lofton were both starters in this game. Before fouling out, Lofton scored the first eight points in overtime. The Braves were only able to put eight points on the board in overtime. Lofton ended the game with 30 points. Kevin Scott of the Tigers ended with a double-double 17 points and 10 rebounds. DeAndre Davis of the Braves ended with 23 points.

“This is our third consecutive league title,” said TSU Head Coach Mike Davis. “Obviously, this is huge for our program as that is an impressive feat that took a lot of sacrifice and hard work this season and over the years.”

“We have to turn it up a notch,” said Kevin Scott on the SWAC tournament. “Everyone is coming for us.”

The Tigers will be the No. 1 seed in the Toyota SWAC Basketball Tournament that takes place March 10-11th at the Toyota Center in Houston.
