U of H Says Goodbye to the Hofheinz Pavillion

The University of Houston’s Hofheinz Pavillion has hosted a litany of sporting events and concerts.  After 48 years, following a Cougar victory against East Carolina University, the community said goodbye to the arena. U of H staples were in attendance of the game to bid farewell to the space that holds so many memories. Current track and field coach Leroy Burrell said, “This place has a lot of history: Guy versus Lewis, Phi Slama Jama, Elvin Hayes, so many greats came through here. We’d run the stairs, I’ve seen the Cougars play here numerous times, I saw Prince in concert here.” The real treat was when NBA greats Elvin Hayes and Hakeem Olajuwon took to the court. Hayes passed the ball to Olajuwon who dunked for old times sake. “You know this is where it all started, so walking down the aisle, it was all coming back,” said Olajuwon. The U of H community will have a brand new space to look forward to for the 2018-2019 season as the Pavilion is transformed into the Fertitta Center.
