The 2017 Houston United Negro College Fund, Inc.’s “A Mind Is…” Gala

The United Negro College Fund, Inc. (UNCF) recently held its 29th annual “A Mind Is…” Gala on Saturday, November 18, 2017, at the Hilton Americas Hotel in Downtown Houston. The leadership council members of UNCF along with the Honorary Chair Melanie Gray, Gala Chairs Diana and Elijah White, and Area Director – Houston Juana Collins were among those who helped pull off this extravaganza. The Master of Ceremony was Khambrel Marshall, (KPRC – Channel 2) the weather anchor and host of Houston Newsmakers. The evening concluded with a stellar performance by the ZAPP Band.


Excellence in Education Honoree was presented to Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. Congresswoman Lee is a vital voice in Washington D.C. and represents the 18th Congressional District of Texas. Congresswoman Lee is considered by many the “Voice of Reason,” and is dedicated to upholding the constitutional rights of all people. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee was chosen for this award because of her outstanding community leadership, advocacy, and civic activities within the greater Houston community and for being involved with UNCF for many years.

John & Drucie Chase Young Builders Honoree was presented to Tarrynce Robinson, Houston I.S.D. School Support Officer, advocate of educational opportunity and equity for many students. Tarrynce Robinson exemplifies excellence in education and has served as the principal of Pleasantville Elementary School, Foerster Elementary School, Holland Middle School, and Bailer Middle School.
