On December 13th, the 29th Annual Bounce Trumpet Awards was held. This year, for the first time, they celebrated past, present and future social justice leaders in a segment called “Stand Up.” The honorees included Tommie Smith, Naomi Campbell, Yara Shahidi and Stacey Abrams.
The Xernona Clayton Award of Distinction – Tommie Smith broke the Olympic and World Record for the 200-meter dash in 1968. On the podium, he and bronze medalist John Carlos stood in solidarity with their fists wrapped in black leather gloves, clenched, and raised in the air to signify their alignment with the black power movement.
Vanguard Award – Naomi Campbell is a groundbreaking international super-model whose philanthropy and activism has impacted the lives of many across the globe.
Valor Award – Stacey Abrams was the former Minority Leader in the Georgia House of Representatives, and is currently a political activist, author, CEO of a Non-profit, and entrepreneur. She has worked tirelessly to thwart social injustices and has been on the front line combating voter suppression.
Trailblazer Award – Yara Shahidi is a young actress and executive producer who has used her voice and platform to be an inspiration to her generation.
