When you look at the New Covenant contract, as was the subject of a recent sermon, I had to agree with the minister who was adamant about not getting the Old and New Covenants twisted. Both are contracts with one superseding the other. And although each is based in fact and faith, don’t get confused by mixing and preaching them as both to be adhered to at the same time. The minister’s point was scripture can be misinterpreted, if you are taught that the Old Testament is still in play and the New Testament is not now the letter of the law, so to speak. In truth once a contract ends and a new one is put in place, the rules of the new contract is what has to be followed.
God released us from the Law of Moses when Christ died on the cross. Take a look at scripture and look up “new’ in your Concordance. You will find that in the case of the New and Old Testament, Christ fulfilled the old contract. Almost like an athlete on the last year of a supposedly current contract, they say that athlete is playing for a new one to be signed at the end of the season. I only bring this up because in sports there’s a thing called a free agent; a player without a team. As Christians this is not where you want to find yourself. And as long as your view is based on what was and not what is, you really aren’t on the team. “For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance-now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant. In the case of a will, it is necessary to prove the death of the one who made it, because a will is in force only when somebody has died; it never takes effect while the one who made it is living. This is why event the first covenant was not put into effect without blood.” Hebrews 9:15-17.
The pastors’ point and mine is I’m in the will. I have an inheritance and I’m claiming all that is rightfully mine and so should you. But if you are ignorant to the tenets of the will, you will go through your life not knowing your sins have been forgiven and as I like to point out, the war is over. We won. There are yet battles we each must fight but really, let the guilt go. Recognize what you have inherited and live in that awareness each and every day. You and I were cleansed before we were even born. Now if you believe this then good for you. If you don’t then you must doubt something about the New Covenant. The problem with this is you will be forever destined to starve spiritually believing you’ve got something to prove or forever trying to live up to a salvation that is yours without ever asking. It’s called read or reread Hebrews 9 and 10. It’s a lesson in humility and grace and you had nothing to do with it. It is now and always shall be God’s unconditional love as manifest in the life and death and life of Jesus Christ.
May God bless and keep you always.
