This week, Rockets center Christian Wood joined Adrian Wojonarowski on his podcast “The Woj Pod” to discuss his basketball journey. At 25 years old Wood has played for 6 NBA teams and a few G league teams. His performance through the first few games of the season has been outstanding. Woj asked Wood how he was feeling now that the Rockets have invested in him with a 3-year contract. “It’s my time and I felt like a lot of people were sleep on me.” Wood explained to Woj. “It’s my time to show myself and prove myself and I think I’m going out there and I’m doing a great job of doing that.”
As exciting as this new chapter in Wood’s career seems to be, he entered the Rockets fold during a bit of a tumultuous time as Harden requested a trade this off-season in addition to the Coach and General Manager departing.
“Believe it or not, the team chemistry has been great. Since James has got in, we’ve all clicked. Especially since James and John [Wall] have known each other before even being on the team with each other. They already had an established relationship, so it was great. And then John and Boogie Cousins had a relationship, so they just mesh well. We’ve all just really come together.”
“I think our only thing was, we just didn’t have enough practice time together as a group. It would either be two guys were out, or James would be out, or John would be out. We’ve never just had that group as a whole, except maybe a couple games. The sky’s the limit for us, and I think we can make a push in the Western Conference.”
The other oddity about this season is the looming threat of COVID-19. Woj asked Wood what the day-to-day process has been like.
“It’s tough. It’s something new to us, you know we’ve never actually been in a pandemic. We’re still learning, still trying to get through it and I know the league is still working together and trying to fix things and trying to go through this contact tracing stuff. You know my team has been a part of it so…It’s tough but we have to get past it and find a way to work with it.”
For what it’s worth it seems like there is a chance that the squad might stick together and see what happens this season.
