Race: The film ‘Race’ is based on the story of Jesse Owens and his journey to the 1936 Olympics. Jesse is played by Stephan James, a face you might recognize from Selma. (You know, because Stephan played John Lewis in Selma….just kidding…there were a sea of brown faces in Selma so you probably won’t recognize him.) If you aren’t familiar with James’ work you certainly will be after this film. I do have to say, it took me a minute to settle into having Jason Sudeikis play a serious role. I kept bracing myself for a punch line as I only know his comedic work. But alas…there were none. This is a great film for a Sunday afternoon post-nap. Couch.
Keanu: ‘Keanu’ is the first full-length feature film from comedians Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele following the end of their successful show Key and Peele. The film follows two friends that stumble into the drug dealing world in hopes of saving a stolen kitten. The movie has a few surprise cameos and is guaranteed to make you laugh. I’d suggest watching a couple clips from their show to see if their brand of comedy is your cup of tea. If it is, this is the movie for you. If it isn’t…you need better taste in comedy. Simply because your fellow movie-goers’ fits of laughter around you may induce even more laughter, causing you to have an exponential amount of fun…I vote cinema.
X-Men: Apocalypse: While the critics haven’t been so nice to the latest X-Men film, I must say it’s not as bad as they are making it out to be. I actually quite enjoyed it. In this film we are introduced to Apocalypse who was the first mutant and in turn, most powerful. The Apocalypse character is based in Cairo, Egypt and the powers he possesses are a nod to that geographic location. I’m here for anything having to do with Egypt so I definitely enjoyed that aspect of it. You get to know a few of the characters a little more in depth and the subplots lay the groundwork for future X-Men films. Remember, always stay through the credits of any Marvel film for the bonus scene. Cinema.
