This morning, Council Member Dwight Boykins and representatives from Visit Houston/ Houston First, Houston Southeast, Cigna, HEB, Centerpoint Energy, Cigna, Verizon, and The Mayor’s Office of Special Events held a press conference announcing the Holiday Tree Lighting & Kwanzaa Celebration on Almeda.
During the press conference, Council Member Dwight Boykins expressed why the Holiday Tree Lighting Festival is so important to our community. “I am delighted to bring this one-of-a- kind holiday celebration back to our community,” said Council Member Dwight Boykins. “I came up with the concept for this festival because I knew our diverse community deserved a high caliber multi-cultural event.”
Representatives from our title sponsor organization, Visit Houston/ Houston First and Houston Southeast also spoke during the press conference, “We are excited for the opportunity to be involved in this event that will add to the city’s social fabric,” said Jorge Franz, Senior Vice President of Tourism for Visit Houston. “We hope we can continue to support for years to come. The holiday celebration helps further our organization’s purpose of providing a sense of unity and a strong community.” said Hina Musa, Executive Director of Houston Southeast.
The Holiday Tree Lighting & Kwanzaa Celebration on Almeda is a free event and the official kick-off for the holiday season. The show features live performances by J. Paul Jr. and the Zydeco Nubreeds, Kwanzaa Drummers and Dancers, U of H Men of Moores, Texas Southern University Choir, and Coldwell Elementary, among others.
Santa will also be on site for photos with children and the event also offers a fantastic kids zone, which includes a rock climbing wall.
