Spring, TX native, Simone Biles, is now the world’s greatest gymnast.
Biles took home the gold in the individual All-Around gymnastics event at the 2016 Rio Olympics. The hometown hero, who was the favorite coming into Rio this year, was able to come from behind after the first half of the final, posting an overall final score of 62.198.
Prior to her individual All-Around victory, Biles was also able to help her team win the gold medal in the team All-Around event. After her team victory, Biles became the first U.S. woman to win the Olympics on vault, and the first to win three Olympic gold medals in a single Olympic Games in gymnastics. The average of her two vaults was 15.966. This isn’t the first time Biles has been considered the best. She is also a three-time World Champion.
Biles wasn’t the only American to bring home some hardware in the individual All-Around. Aly Raisman came in second in the individual All-Around with an overall final score of 60.098. Raisman was part of the gymnastics team who won the gold in the team All-Around event at the Summer Games in London 2012.
This was a significant win also for Coach Marta Karolyi, as it will be her last Olympics as a coach.
“The Final Five,” said the ladies of the gymnastics team once they found out they won the gold medal. When Karolyi heard them say “The Final Five,” she broke down into tears. Karolyi has been the coach of the gymnastics team for the past 15 years. Ever since Karolyi has been there, the gymnastics teams have medaled in every world and Olympic competition.
