The University of Houston is set to be represented in Tokyo at the Olympic Games by five athletes who currently attend or did attend the University. The games are set to take place July 23 through Aug. 8.
Brianne Bethel, Tristan Evelyn, Mario Burke, Shaun Maswanganyi and Micaela Bouter are all set to compete in their first Olympic games.

BRIANNE BETHEL – BAHAMAS
Bethel is set for her first Olympic Games after a fantastic outdoor season with the Houston Track & Field team. She will be competing for the Bahamas in Tokyo as an Olympic qualifier in the 200-meter and the 4×400-meter relay. Bethel is coming off two individual American Athletic Conference titles and conference Most Valuable Performance honors after a pair of record-breaking performances at the league championships.
TRISTAN EVELYN – BARBADOS
Evelyn will be competing in her first Olympic games as a representative of Barbados. Evelyn secured the 100-meter title at The American Outdoor Championships and advanced to the NCAA Championships as a member of the 4×100-meter relay, helping the UH women score its first points at the meet since 2012.
MARIO BURKE – BARBADOS
Burke is set to compete in two events at the Tokyo Olympics as a qualifier in the 100-meter and 200-meter. He closed out a stellar career at UH at the end of the 2018-19 season and is a 10-time All-American and NCAA Champion in the 4×100-meter relay.
SHAUN MASWANGANYI – SOUTH AFRICA
Maswanganyi had a breakout season in his first year of competition at the collegiate level and is set to compete for South Africa at the Olympics in the 100-meter, 200-meter and 4×100-meter relay. He closed out his freshman campaign with three All-America honors after earning two podium finishes at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships and qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. Maswanganyi was the recipient of The American Most Outstanding Performance honors after walking away with conference titles in the 100-meter and 200-meter, clocking conference meet records in the process.
MICAELA BOUTER – SOUTH AFRICA
Bouter is the second Cougar set to represent South Africa at the Tokyo Olympics as a qualifier in the 3-Meter. She had a stellar career as a diver on the Houston Swimming & Diving team and left her mark as a nine-time American Athletic Conference Diver of the Week, two-time conference champion in the 3-Meter, three-time NCAA Diving Zone qualifier and the 2016-17 American Athletic Conference Most Outstanding Diver.
