Dr. William Harold Mack, 81, of Houston passed away Friday, April 1, 2016. He was born to William Hunter Mack and Essie Coleman Mack of Birmingham, Alabama, on August 15, 1934, where he graduated from Parker High School. He then attended and graduated from Fisk University with a Bachelor’s Degree. He later joined the United States Army for three years before going to Meharry Medical School in Nashville, Tennessee, where he obtained his Medical Degree. He completed his residency in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, specializing in the field of Pediatrics. Upon completion, he opened his private practice in Houston, Texas, in 1967, where he also re-joined the Army in the Reserve Corps with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He also served in the Army Medical Unit during the Gulf War.
William lived his life passionately dedicated to the medical field by serving children in the Houston area for over 48 years. He served on staff at various hospitals, was a member of the Texas Medical Foundation, Texas Medical Association, and served as Medical Director of Thomas Care Center, in Houston, Texas. He also enjoyed training students pursuing careers in the medical field. William adored classical music and played oboe, saxophone, piano and church organ in his youth. He was a loving father, and in his spare time, enjoyed keeping his inquisitive mind sharp explaining his latest Sudoku puzzles to his children and beating them at the game of Scrabble. He was a devout Catholic committed to attending Mass and Bible Studies weekly with his diverse Christian study groups. In recent years, he achieved a state of peace in communion with his faith and inspired others with the simple phrase, “Keep Calm and Carry On”. William Harold Mack, M.D. leaves a legacy of unconditional love and forgiveness for all of us to follow.
He is preceded in death by his daughter, Diann Harris and his son, Alexander Mack. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Claudia Mack, his children, Debra Mack, Judy Bennett, Lori Mack, Toni Mack, Daniela Mack Shrader, and Gabriela Mack; his brother, Ulysses Mack and sister, Ernestine Marshall; one sister-in-law Georgia Mack, and one brother-inlaw, Flavio Baiardi; three nieces, Adrienne Marshall, Valorie Salahuddin, and Estafanfa Baiardi; three nephews, Maximo Baiardi, Brian Mack and Rodney Marshall; three sons-inlaw, Larry Bennett, Cedric Harris, and Alek Shrader; four grandchildren, Charisse Wiltz, Corrie Jones, Cedric Harris, and Evangelina Shrader. He also leaves to cherish his memory 5 great grandchildren and a host of other extended relatives, close friends, and loyal patients.
The Mack family received friends on Thursday, April 7, 2016 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a Vigil Service at Dettling Funeral Home, 14094 Memorial Dr., Houston, TX 77079. The Funeral Mass commenced Friday, April 8, 2016 at 10:30 AM at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 625 Nottingham Oaks Trail, Houston, TX 77079. Dr. Mack was laid to rest in Woodlawn Cemetery following Holy Mass via motorized cortege.
