As talented and beautiful as Keke Wyatt is, she is just like the rest of us. In the latest issue of Rolling Out, she voices her struggles with feeling confident in herself. She admits she often feels self-conscious about her looks and even her voice.
When told that she’s beautiful by interviewer Porsha Monique, KeKe says she doesn’t see it, but she DOES see a person with a big heart when she looks in the mirror. “But nobody can see it because they’re too busy paying attention to what’s on the outside. And I don’t care for what’s on the outside, because I feel like people are looking at me and judging me,” she said.
When it comes to her amazing, multi-octave voice, the R&B diva even feels uncertain about that, sometimes, too! “As God is my witness, even with singing, I’m just not confident. Like if somebody said, ‘Keke, sing His Eye is on the Sparrow’. And I’ll sing it, but the whole time I’m wondering, ‘Ugh, do they hear that?’” she reveals.
Despite doubting her gifts and her outer appearance, there’s one aspect of her life that she IS confident in: being a mother. The mother of eight says being the rock of her large family gives her great joy and a lot of confidence.
“Now, I’m very confident in that and my family, and showing my love. And my compassion and taking care of my family and working like a monster and making sure that everybody has what they need and want. Even if I don’t get anything, I don’t care. So, I’m confident in the fact that I’m a great mom. And a good daughter, and a good sister, and a good wife, the best wife I can be without being a wench,” she stated.
About her new album Rated Love, Wyatt says she was inspired by Beyoncé, and she wants to inspire people to want to love again.
“Like Beyoncé, her song Me, Myself and I spoke to me on so many different levels… At that time, it was just me. I had three kids. Like it was so crazy. Everything that she was saying in that song spoke to me and spoke to my life. And I said to myself then, ‘This must be what my music does to people.’ Because that song really helped me get through some things that I was going through at the time. It’s crazy how a song can literally bring you through dark times and it can bring you through devastation. That’s what I want to do. That’s what I aim for. I aim to help save people from mess. I think that this album is really going to speak to young girls, and boys, and older women and older men,” she said.
