At Poindexter Dental, we are proud to celebrate Autism Awareness Month this April. Join us in increasing awareness of this condition that needs greater understanding to improve acceptance and appreciation of those affected by this condition. The overall goals of the celebration are to encourage us to become partners in a movement towards acceptance and appreciation in order to improve their quality of life.
Some of you may not be familiar with the symbolism of the Autism Awareness Ribbon — the puzzle pattern reflects the complexity of the autism spectrum. The different colors and shapes represent the diversity of the people and families living with the condition. The brightness of the ribbon signals hope — hope that through increased awareness of autism, and through early intervention and access to appropriate services/supports, people with autism will lead full lives with the ability to interact with the world on the own terms.
When seeing special needs patients like these, we pay attention to the details necessary for their care in making treatment as painless as possible without creating anxiety, fear, or undue distress. This is one of the reasons we do not utilize restraints at Poindexter Dental. We have found their use counterproductive to delivery of care without causing emotional distress to the patient. Communication with the patient as well as having trusted family members present during treatment are paramount to accomplishing this goal.
We encourage you to work with us in increasing acceptance of those with special needs in our communities and schools so that we can appreciate the unique aspects of all people, making this world a better place for all of us.
