The road to wealth is paved with goals, S.M.A.R.T. goals! But it is not just simply goals, we must also examine our values and determine what is important to us.
Oftentimes, we forget to search within to discover our deepest and most profound goals for our lives. We allow society to dictate what should be important and, lest we forget, the Joneses. Maybe, it is the Smiths or the Millers for some. Yet, we allow strangers to determine the cars we drive, the size of our homes, or the labels we wear. Do you remember the latest craze with the Yorkie Poos and the red bottom shoes? Yes, shoe designer, Christian Louboutin’s nickname is “red bottoms”!
Sometimes, I wonder why we are so easily influenced to spend but not when it comes to saving and investing. Why do we not try to find out how someone is succeeding on their road to wealth? It is a known fact that success leaves clues, but no one searches for the clue. Well, it begins with life planning! When was the last time you discussed life planning with someone or when was the last time you sat down and thought about plans for your life? Life planning is essential to developing a sound financial plan that would pave the road to wealth. It focuses on the human side of financial planning. There comes a point where we must move beyond the numbers and address our deepest desires and values in hopes to pursue our passion and to remove obstacles that may hinder fulfilling our dreams. It is only then that we can establish clear concise goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely. The road to wealth is built brick by brick and each goal represents a brick. Our life values are the mortar that holds the bricks in place.
Now, some people may look at life planning and ask the question, “What does it have to do with money?” Well, it has everything to do with money. When you understand what you genuinely want out of life, you can be intentional and make sound financial choices that align with your values. Life planning allows you to strip away things in which you may have built your identity, i.e., your job.
Therefore, you can be true and authentic to the person within. You will be able to build a life that you would not regret. A life that would allow you to confront your mortality without questioning what you missed, who did you not get to be, or what you did not get to do. The road to wealth requires to you to not only make some smart money moves, but it also requires some smart planning. Life planning is financial planning done right.
