Fashion, Community, and Empowerment
On Saturday, May 2, the historic Almeda corridor in Houston, TX, was the backdrop for the all-white day party and fashion show hosted by MELODRAMA Boutique owner Jackie Adams. The fashion show debuted MELODRAMA’s new collection, Idrissa, in honor of Jackie’s late mother.
Adams has been the owner of MELODRAMA Boutique for 18 years and says that surviving the pandemic as a small business owner led her to create the new line.
“This year has been so hard on so many people, especially small businesses. Losing my mother three years ago was extremely difficult because she was my support system; she was my biggest champion,” Adams said. “During the pandemic, I had time to think and process the next steps for me personally and for MELODRAMA Boutique. I am so very blessed, and a combination of these emotions led me to create the Idrissa collection.”
The collection, named for and inspired by Adams’ mother, Idrissa, features a stylish mud cloth poncho and handbags ranging in various colors.
“My mom was all about African culture, clothing, and educating the Black community through her works with the Shrine of The Black Madonna. This collection pays tribute to her by incorporating traditional African pieces into everyday fashions,” said Adams.
Staying true to her mother’s work in the community, the all-white affair was a day of healing and giving back to the community that has supported MELODRAMA boutique for 18 years.
Due to COVID-19, Adams was not able to host the annual all-white affair last year. This year’s event featured a who’s who in Houston. The runway fashion show stopped traffic along the Almeda corridor in Houston’s historic Third Ward. Local singing sensation Marium Echo entertained guests with a live performance. Complimentary food and drinks were served, and lots of shopping!
“I have always hosted the All-White party for my birthday but wasn’t able to do it last year because of COVID,” said Adams. “This year, I decided to celebrate me and my mom and everyone who made it through this past year.”
Adams says the unveiling of the Idrissa Collection is a dream come true. To learn more about MELODRAMA Boutique and the Idrissa Collection, visit www.melodramaboutique.com.
