Plot twist. Television just isn’t fun anymore. The latest season of Orange is the New Black left me numb because it’s no longer a dark comedy about a women’s prison; it’s a disturbing reenactment of recent tragedies. I won’t spoil the ride by giving too much away, but just know that while OITNB is a fictional program, these story lines are based on the plight that actual prisoners and prisoners of an unjust system face daily. The writers of the show have talked in greater detail about the very real and specific injustices that inspired the most impactful season to date. As heartbreaking as this season turned out to be, it was necessary, timely, and honest.
