Psalm 119:1-3 The Message (MSG)
1-8 You’re blessed when you stay on course, walking steadily on the road revealed by God.You’re blessed when you follow his directions, doing your best to find him. That’s right—you don’t go off on your own; you walk straight along the road he set.
Forward Thinkers, this week we will look at the many different storylines surrounding the birth of Jesus. In my study time I discovered a common theme flowing throughout many connected to the birth of Jesus. I’m also seeing this theme at work with us today as we follow Jesus.
The enemy is busy trying to get us off course; therefore, our primary focus point as we begin 2020 is stay the course.
“Stay the course” is a phrase used in the context of a war or battle meaning to pursue a goal regardless of any obstacles or criticism.
- to continue with a process, effort, etc., even though it is difficult
- to continue doing something until it is finished or until you achieve something you have planned to do:
Forward Thinkers, if you are motivated by being liked or need to be comfortable at all times you’ll never release the faith needed to stay the course.
Staying the course requires a certain amount of guts, courage, and endurance.
Forward Thinkers, let me inject an acronym to assist us in staying on course: EAT
- Eliminate quitting as an option
- Adjust yourself to new patterns of thought
- Trust the process
Let’s continue to build on the foundation from Psalm 119:
When you stay on course you will end up blessed.
Walking steadily by faith not by sight you will end up blessed.
When you follow God’s direction you end up blessed.
Add verse 6 to the equation: then I’d never have any regrets.
Forward Thinkers, if we stay the course God has designed for our life we can live life without regrets. Everything becomes a lesson and every lesson teaches us to re-route ourselves back to a pathway of blessings.
Forward Thinkers, no more losses only lessons in this house of faith.
Declare with me I will get there. Yes, I will.
Let’s shift to Luke 1
5 In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. 6 Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly. 7 But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.
I. Unfavorable Facts But Stay The Course
-been that way long time
-less than, mocked, hidden depression
II. Even When It Don’t Make Sense Stay The Course
-Man of God not exempt from issues of life
-Family in church, ok, now faith up
-Righteous but still have to deal with difficulties of life
11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. 12 When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear. 13 But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John. 14 He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, 15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born. 16 He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. 17 And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
III. Stop Being Gripped By Fear Stay The Course
-God didn’t give us spirit of fear
-fear keeps us stuck in place
IV. Pray And Stay The Course
-pray with real expectations
-pray believing God is able
-trust God to come through when you pray
18 Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.”
V. Stop Doubting Yourself and God and Stay The Course
-I can do all things
-I am more than a conqueror
-Is there anything too hard for God?
19 The angel said to him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. 20 And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time.”
23 When his time of service was completed, he returned home. 24 After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. 25 “The Lord has done this for me,” she said. “In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace among the people.”
VI. God Will Silence You To Keep You On The Course
-stop talking yourself out of it
-your words bring results, positive or negative
-many have spoken blessings right out of their lives
VII. Until It Happens Stay On The Course
-up to the time when it happens
VIII. At The Appointed Time You Will Be Rewarded For Staying On The Course
Forward Thinkers, the bible says Elizabeth is now pregnant with a baby boy named John. John is called great and the angel of God says John has a great purpose to fulfill.
Forward Thinkers, the birth of John is a display of God’s favor and will reverse the cloud of disgrace that had followed Elizabeth.
Forward Thinkers, the birth of John shifted Zechariah from being faithful to the church to believing in the faithfulness of God.
Forward Thinkers, stay the course and trust in the fact that if God said it then it shall come to pass.
