Port of Houston Authority: Giving Back to the Bay
On Saturday, July 16, 2016, an Oyster Reef Restoration Project was held at Galveston’s Sweetwater Reserve in Galveston, Texas made possible by the Port of Houston Authority (PHA). The Oyster Reef Restoration Project will create a vital habitat for new oysters and other local aquatic life. Oysters often times act as a natural filtration system by filtering silt and contaminants from the water. Young oysters need a hard surface like the shells of other oysters to settle and grow. Stewardship efforts like this helps the Port of Houston Authority be an environmental leader and show their commitment to the Bay, which is vital to the work at the Port of Houston Authority. Additionally, the Port of Houston Authority are increasing habitat, improving water quality and learning more about the ecology of Galveston Bay. Volunteers were able to place old oyster shells in bags, carry those bags into the water, and then place them into Galveston Bay to create new oyster reefs.
