The Texas Southern University cheerleading and dance teams had a successful weekend as both teams won big at the annual Universal Collegiate Summer Camp (UCA/UDA) in San Marcos, Texas.
The TSU Cheerleaders were awarded first place awards in small coed timeout and sideline routines. Led by head coach Shontrese Comeaux and assistant coach Greg Malone, the team followed up with another first-place finish in the leadership and ambassador categories along with another first-place performance in camp traditions. The team also received four blue ribbons which is the camp’s highest honor. TSU Cheer will now turn its attention to National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) camp this weekend.
In the dance category, the TSU Sensations also had a successful camp debut as the team won first place in overall full package representation/most collegiate along with a pair of superior awards in game day and spirit. The team, led by Gretchen Jean, also placed second in home routine performance while also earning two team ribbons and six individual ribbons. As a result of the team’s success, the dancers earned a bronze bid to National Dance Alliance (NDA) College Nationals in Daytona Beach, Fla. in 2024.
“Both of our cheer and dance teams have worked hard throughout the year and I’m proud of the success they’ve attained on the national level,” said Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Kevin Granger. “Each program has set high goals for the upcoming season and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the future as both programs are excellent ambassadors of Texas Southern University.”
