The 2nd Annual Year of Joy Holiday Ice Skating Party Bringing Joy to 100 Houston Area Children

Ice skating participants
More than 100 children from Houston’s Third Ward community recently experienced the joys of ice skating for the holidays at the 2nd Annual Year of Joy Holiday Ice Skating Party at the ice powered by Green Mountain Energy at Discovery Green, 1500 McKinney, 4-6 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 11, 2017. This magical event was sponsored by H-E-B, which provided food, cake and toys. CSI provided round trip transportation for 40 children from Peck Elementary School and their chaperones. Other students from Houston Southside Community Center and Hype Freedom Schools also participated. Children had fun participating in this event. Other companies that provided support included the Houston Rockets, Giant Dollar, Picture Me Houston Photo Booth, and the Houston Chronicle, along with a team of volunteers. The Year of Joy Holiday Ice Skating Party was started in December 2016 by Houston Chronicle fashion and beauty editor Joy Sewing, who is also a former competitive ice skater and coach. She became Houston’s first African American figure skating coach while in college. Her mission was to share the experience and joys of ice skating with children who might never have the opportunity to try it. For more information please visit www.joysewing.com/yearofjoy-project/.
