Houston Area Urban League 48th Annual Equal Opportunity Day Gala
On Saturday, June 18, 2016, the Houston Area Urban League held their 48th Annual Equal Opportunity Day Gala. The theme of this year’s Gala was “Empowering Families… Celebrating Our Fathers.” Judson W. Robinson III, President and CEO and Cary P. Yates, Chairman of the Board gave thanks to the many friends, organizations, foundations and corporations that annually support the on-going programs and services offered and to share our commitment and determination to serve others. The Houston Area Urban League, founded in 1968, is a United Way Agency affiliated with The National Urban League. Its mission is to help African Americans and other minorities to secure economic self-reliance, parity, power and civil rights. Masters of Ceremony were Khambrel Marshall (member of KPRC 2 Severe Weather Team) and Syan Rhodes (member of KPRC 2). The entertainment was provided by Marcus D. Wiley (comedian). Mr. Gerald D. Hines (Honorary Chair) is the Founder and Chair of Hines Interests.

Reception Honoring New President of Texas Southern University Dr. Austin A. Lane
On Thursday, June 23, 2016, The Achievement Through Leadership Foundation and the Missouri City-Sugar Land, Texas Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. presented a Reception to honor Dr. Austin A. Lane the 12th President of Texas Southern University. The reception was held at the Houston City Club at 7:00-9:00 p.m. This was a spectacular reception and congrats again to Dr. Austin Lane on becoming the new president of TSU. Go Tigers!
National Council of Negro Women Elease Knight Section
National Council of Negro Women (Elease Knight Section) presented The Annual Parade of Salad & Hat Show on Sunday, June 26, 2016 at the Quail Run Community Center in Missouri City. Dr. Brenda Meloncon (Chapter President) was the Mistress of Ceremony, Opening & Greetings was given by Mrs. Anna Taylor James, Litany read by Mrs. Ruby Jackson, Benediction by Mrs. Ruth Jackson, and Guest Commentator presented Hattitude! “Wearing hats with an Attitude.”
National Council of Negro Women’s mission is to lead, develop and advocate for women of African descent as they support their families and communities. They fulfill their mission through research, advocacy and national and community-based health, education and economic empowerment services and programs in the United States and Africa. Many were in attendance including Texas State Representative Ron Reynolds and his lovely wife Dr. Jonita Reynolds. Also in attendance were Fred Taylor, Dr. Janet Willis and Iva Ward.
